If you double click in the name area (but not on the name) next to the thumbnail of the image in the Layer Paletteyou can bring up the Layer Style dialogue box up where it says 'Blend If: [gray]' where it says 'This Layer' sliding the white arrows to the left will remove the white pixels (you can split the arrows by pressing Alt while sliding them this will vary the tolerance of the amount of white pixels you remove.
