It's a very old event, hence the odd spelling.

If you want to get rid of old days, let a neighbour borrow them and never get them back. That is how Lent got its name.

We can replace the void with nice fruity-smelling chemical-replacement days on Ester Sunday.

But then retailers appropriated those holidays and made them all about buying new stuff. Film studios appropriated the TV schedules to promote The Great Escape, James Bond, and the Sound of Music. Usually shown separately, unless you find the rather entertaining and underrated "James Bond escapes from the Sound of Music".
