Phoenix Nights was pretty damn good, I have to admit.It didn't jam Northern culture down your throat nearly as much as his stand-alone stuff.

It could have been a parody of a documentry of a working mens club anywhere in Britain...But with a northen twist that gave it a twist of honesty, that made you cringe at yourself as you laughed at it's credibility....

I totally get you.If you watch 'That Peter Kay Thing', it definitely puts the idea that it's a satire forward. And if that's what they were going for, it certainly worked.
