# Woah! That's ace! :D *clicks*

# hey you
how's the daft punk comin along
(, Thu 20 Oct 2011, 19:39, archived)
# It's going slowly, I'll admit.
I went out and bought a few things today, like filler, spray paint, gaffer tape, etc. I've still yet to find some sort of helmet; not even the fancy dress shops have anything like what I need :(

# plastic bucket
for trick-or-treaters. poundland sell them and you could probably fit one on your head, not to mention the fact that they'ds be easy to alter
(, Thu 20 Oct 2011, 19:51, archived)
# Hmm... I might consider it.
I did see one of those helmets today, the ones with two can holders and straws. I could take those off and alter it slightly, and we've got a good starting point.

# if you can knock something together cheaply that'll do the job
there's no point spending a fortune on other stuff. even if it doesn't work out, you're only down a couple of quid
(, Thu 20 Oct 2011, 19:56, archived)
# True true, and it's only for one night (or two if I go to the other party a few days later)
If I can get the panels of the helmet cut out from linoleum or some kind of plastic, I should have it done on time. :)

# lino is tricky stuff
it'll bend and flop on you and you can't harden it without making it brittle
(, Thu 20 Oct 2011, 20:02, archived)
# I suppose I could double it up, or make it thicker with some board.
I've got a sheet here right now, it's about 3-4mm thick. There are parts on the helmet where I'll need to bend it slightly, so I might have to mix things up a bit.

# you can always give it a try
i know someone who wrapped a piece of it around his shoulders and pretended to be batman. daft fucker :)
(, Thu 20 Oct 2011, 20:11, archived)
# Haha :D should have used a bin bag!
It's like you say though; as long as I'm not paying shitloads (and I'm not), there's no harm done. If the project fails I've got other costumes I could wear.

# PET bottle plastic can be shaped with a cool iron.

# Thanks for the tip! I might do that for the visor :D

# there's a youtube vid
somewhere of the guy who made the stormtrooper helmets I remember watching but he had all the equipment and a plastic vacuum setup. I can imagine if you nail it and are able to make a few you could have a setup flogging them, the fact they're so hard to make will make them more desirable. if ameobaboy pops up he'll have loads of good advice
(, Thu 20 Oct 2011, 19:56, archived)
# I think there might be a vacuum forming booth at my uni.
If the price is reasonable I'll give it a go, make the final design look a bit more professional.

And there are people out there selling Daft Punk helmets they've made, but for hundreds of pounds a piece. :S

# definitly worth a go
here's that vid:

gonna be tough getting it done for halloween - maybe rope in some help?

# Hmm, the link isn't working. Is it this one?

I was really hoping to get it done tonight, but with no helmet to build around, it'll have to wait till tomorrow :( I guess I could ask someone in 3D design or technology about it; I went down there to ask if I could have it 3D printed, but it'd cost WAY too much.

I do plan to have each segment cut out on plastic/lino using the laser cutter; I downloaded a net of sorts, and tried it out with thin card. It definitely looks the dog's bollocks. :D
