I got rid of a Scottish 20 in a chip shop in Redhill, Surrey once.Never had one refused, personally. Mind you I wouldn't expect most places to take a £100 note even if it were an English one. A fifty is pushing it.

I made the mistake of taking Scottish money to Romania.As you tend to get a better exchange rate there. But no banks would accept it, until I saw a Bank of Scotland and thought I was finally sorted. But no, they wouldn't take it either!
Had to go back to the airport to get it changed.
