
When I taught EFL, I would go to the pub with students of age, and they would all make a specific effort to only speak English in front of me, out of respect for me, but I thought it was embarassingly (for me) hospitable of them.

about halfway through the night I realised they were all speaking English even though some of them had very limited language skills
I felt, quite frankly, embarrassed by their consideration and assured them I didn't have a problem with them speaking their native languages in front of me
