We didn't have anime when I was a child.We had a pretty decent cultural trade balance with Japan when I was a kid. We were sending them Kiss, and they were sending us Speed Racer and Gamera, and that was about it. Oh, and Shogun Warriors.
You've got to admit, the Sledgehog isn't entirely unlike Totoro. Only instead of being a gentle, benevolent nature spirit, he's the spirit of hitting stuff with hammers.
