Also, fewer colours, smaller proportions (you can make it around 30% bigger with html without too much quality loss)

Dither can be good too, but only in certain situations.

i dunno what program you use, but photoshop has great optimising options, i find lowering the dither often gives it a nice cartoon effect aswell as saving kb.

oh yeah, and if you're re-uplaoding to b3tards, name the file something else or it won't replace it

it does replace it,

but you have to hard-reload (ctrl-shift-R in firefox) to see the replaced image on /board; otherwise it loads the version stored in the cache.
