I remember having a hefty book about the making of the Watchmen graphic novel, and it was talking about referencing and all that.

# Yep. Have a look at Marvels sometime. Alex Ross took loads of reference shots of himself and his mates
to get the images he wanted for that. Right down to making a cardboard Galactus helmet.
