they just got squashed a bit, rather than chopped off. Still freaked me out as a small and impressionable child. I saw Day The Earth Stood Still when I was about 4 and I can remember having to ask my mum if flying saucers were real. She pointed out that it was ok as the wouldn't be able to land near us as it was too hilly.
