Indeed!It was not only a loosely maintained attempt at law enforcement, it was also to try and make sense of the world, which at the time, very few people tried to do. Of course, there were excellent minds such as Galilei and Copernicus who helped found a society in which we wouldn't jump to conclusions about the universe; we would go out and test it for ourselves.
