Yeah, lovely design, I think I've got a figure of that somewhere. I wonder what happened to this kind of anime, it's all cute big-eyed stuff now.

# Yeah - it was one of the best animes from the golden days, when characters were interesting, and mostly male, storylines were good, and mech designs were sensible and well thought out

Patlabor was kind of like hill street blues, but with robots.

Of course, Shinji in NGE was arguably the start of whiny protagonists. I dunno, I'd be pretty thrilled if I got to pilot a giant robot.
