
I think it's stretching it to say that the entire trilogy is an allegory for industrialisation, but it's certainly true that the Scouring of the Shire was about the industrialisation of the Midlands countryside and the loss of what Tolkien (as a wealthy, educated man) viewed as a 'better way of life'.
He was also open about the Shire being at roughly the latitude of Oxford and the Balfalas being roughly around Sicily, I think it was, or perhaps it was the Bay of Naples.

Except the films. I like the films. Except the middle of Two Towers. That can fuck off. Also the terrible CGI of Legolas on an elephant's back. Seriosuly, I can do better than that and I'm an idiot at animation. Pah.

Shelob section was ... alright ... but Frodo and Sam's escape from the tower by the Black Gate was ... awful. Best bit IHMO was Christopher Lee as Saruman. Legend.
