^adding 208.67.222.222 to the list of acceptable DNS Servers got it sorted after a dozen failed attempts at flushing the cache

Just reading about openDNS on their websitenot really taken too much notice of any of this before.
My ISP goes through lots of short periods of seriously degraded service and I think that's often due to DNS issues.
