it really pays to keep a consistent global light in your layer effects, the end result will look far more polished

some of the default layer styles are pretty cool, you can jazz them up even more by adding a bevel and maybe an outer glowexperiment and find your own perfect combination, the trick is knowing when to stop, it is very easy to make something look 'too' finished
