The author died with one book left to run, and then his son took it over and managed to spin it out into three.
Then came prequels.
I jacked it in after about 9 or 10 books but the whole lot must be well over 15 volumes by now...
TL;DR They make the Hobbit movies look concise and punchy.

Agree!I got in about 10 books deep and ran out of gas. Similar to GoT but lower quality word spew.
