Best one I learnt for cats is a small bag full of water. Think sandwich bag \ freezer bag. Close hits then count.

but I don't understand how it could go exothermic.
I can't leave metalic sodium lying around.
Wouldn't peroxide be simpler?
The cat being the catalyst in the resulting reaction.
H2O2+Cat = 02+H2O+Heat+Carbon compounds = H2O+Burning cat+heat etc?
