Historically, psychopathic conquerors switch to punishment mode when a population refuses to yield. Alexander “the great” spared everyone that submitted to him but annihilated everyone that resisted, such as the entire population of the Phoenician city of Tyre. Roman emperors routinely punished whole countries that rebelled, for example the salting of the fields of Britain after Boudicca’s revolt. When the allies were closing in on Paris, Hitler ordered its complete destruction, famously the Nazi commander of Paris refused to obey. And Putin himself ordered the total destruction of Grozny. For the moment, the idea is still to bring the wayward people of the breakaway Russian region of Ukraine back into the fold of Mother Russia where they belong. But if this Ukrainian resistance holds, at some point Putin will switch to punishment mode, and then the bombs really will rain down. Zelensky knows this, hence his desperate pleas for a no fly zone.
