Cryptic? Sounds like triptychwhich is defined as "a work, such as an altarpiece, consisting of three painted or carved panels that are hinged together".
You'd be right to think that you would find a hinge on a motorboat, a new car or a silver tea set. But you'd also find a hinge in Hinge and Bracket who threw things into a bin, probably.
