My genuine preference, UKIP parodies aside,would be to have our de facto head of state our actual head of state. That being the Speaker of the Commons. The speaker of the Lords could be the deputy HoS.
They would be elected in exactly the same way as they are now, and be at least as accountable as they are now. The HoS's powers to review and veto legislation that affects the monarch's estate would be abolished, and the casting vote in a hung parliament would be retained by the Speaker.
This way we have continuity, less unpalatable change at once, and can actually let the monarchy live out their lives of privilege without hanging OR shooting them.
They could petition a special Royal Commission (we could still have them) to dispute ownership of our national assets, which would be reviewed on a case by case basis and dealt with fairly.
