As far as recording stuff, for personal use I use SmartMusic Studio, Propellerheads Reason, and Digital Performer for all my recording and etc. It's a hoojly expensive package, but it's worth it. Start out with SmartMusic, as I believe that's the cheapest of the lot. Unless you've got the bank, then go for Digital Performer. I lurves that program.
