it's down to the priority of goals
ask yourself, 'Is the challenge to make something that works on every browser, or do I wish to engage people?' They are not mutually exclusive, but picking technology over engagement will limit the appeal of your work.

I've also learnt that making
interactive games in server-side DHTML is not worth it because its too slow...
Never mind, I'm still proud of Web Minesweeper :)
