was with an apostrophe afterwards as the "creation" to which I referred belonged to the "its".

I used to make that mistake.
I used to think of "its" as 'belonging to it' in the same way you think of David's as 'belonging to David'. So I used to write it as "it's".
That's not right though and the way to think of it is in the same way as 'his' and 'her'. It's a particle and (unless used as a short form of 'it is' never carries an apostrophe.
