# ack
is it the POST beep that`s annoying you, or something inside Windows?

Its not the POST beep. I like that, that tells me whats wrong (if anything).

Its a beep that comes from inside Windows, just as it gets past the "Applying personal settings" stage of the startup procedure. The desktop hasn't appeared (save for the background colour (not wallpaper) and mouse pointer) and it is really high-pitched and loud.

So high-pitched and loud that I didn't think it was the PC speaker at first, but I unplugged it once and it solved the problem. But, as said, I like the POST beep, so I've plugged it back in now.

# I really have no idea
about this - could it be a problem with Windows waiting for the sound card driver to kick in properly? Win 2K is pretty crappy for driver support

failing that, I dunno, I`ve never come across the problem before

# Neither have I...
...I've been using Win2K for a couple of years now with no trouble, just seems to be since this reformat.

If it wasn't such a PITA installing everything again I'd just reformat again and start over.

I don't think its the sound card driver, but its a possibility. I'm not using the included driver, I'm using the latest version (SB Live! 5.1 is the card) from the Creative site.

Cheers for your help anywoo.
