# Very OT, but need help...
...I've just formatted my HD and reinstalled Windows 2000 (SP4) as per usual, and now every time the computer boots up, just as it gets past the 'applying personal settings' stage, the PC speaker lets out a really loud high-pitched beep that lasts for about a second and a half.

Driving me nuts, can anyone offer any helpful ideas?

# ack
is it the POST beep that`s annoying you, or something inside Windows?
(, Sat 13 Sep 2003, 11:50, archived)
#
Its not the POST beep. I like that, that tells me whats wrong (if anything).

Its a beep that comes from inside Windows, just as it gets past the "Applying personal settings" stage of the startup procedure. The desktop hasn't appeared (save for the background colour (not wallpaper) and mouse pointer) and it is really high-pitched and loud.

So high-pitched and loud that I didn't think it was the PC speaker at first, but I unplugged it once and it solved the problem. But, as said, I like the POST beep, so I've plugged it back in now.

# I really have no idea
about this - could it be a problem with Windows waiting for the sound card driver to kick in properly? Win 2K is pretty crappy for driver support

failing that, I dunno, I`ve never come across the problem before
(, Sat 13 Sep 2003, 12:04, archived)
# Neither have I...
...I've been using Win2K for a couple of years now with no trouble, just seems to be since this reformat.

If it wasn't such a PITA installing everything again I'd just reformat again and start over.

I don't think its the sound card driver, but its a possibility. I'm not using the included driver, I'm using the latest version (SB Live! 5.1 is the card) from the Creative site.

Cheers for your help anywoo.

# wow
that would be good in the longer term, really good in fact - at the same time that palmpixels is mainly animation for handheld driven, I already have some good content from filmaker friends of mine. Theres bugger all good online for handhelds, and now with processor speeds improving and big fuck off memory cards, real film for handhelds is possible. Were at a real tipping point, and palmcinema.co.uk would be a great url. What is youer interest? Do you use a handheld, what were you going to do with it?
(, Sat 13 Sep 2003, 11:53, archived)
# same thing
lots of submissions, but when i registered it gMovie was the only format, and its shit compared to kinoma. at the mo, if you click on www.palmcinema.co.uk/ it takes you to a familiar site...
(, Sat 13 Sep 2003, 11:59, archived)
# I keep mentioning this place
but have you seen pocketmovies.com? lots of hand-held-sized movies and information... if you only look for palm when searching, you miss a lot of stuff that can be converted with little/no effort

pocketpcflash.net is another one... I wish I could get flash on my phone, still according to what I've found it's on it's way :-)
(, Sat 13 Sep 2003, 11:59, archived)
# not sure
hat you mean, If its pocketmovies.net, I know it, but its drab, has no exclusive content, and I think it only encodes for pocket pc. In terms of content, the only content on palmpixels will be very animation specific with a section for shorts, the thing is, theres bugger all around for palm really yet, so I hope palmpixels will be popular as the content will be good, I dont need a trailer for the next spiderman movie particularly...

edit - in fact, theyre all mpeg1 content. There is a program called mmplayer, from www.mmplayer.com which natively plays avi and mpeg - its shaping up to be quite good, and removes the necessity for proprietary programs like fireviewer and kinoma.
(, Sat 13 Sep 2003, 12:01, archived)
# fair enough
the encoding I've seen has all been generic avi or mpeg, not specific to pocket pcs.

still, as you say, it's hardly an inspiring site - I look forward to seeing what yours will be like and what you'll have. it'd be nicer if sites didn't get hung up on device-specific things and tried to cater for greater communities, I think... all hand-helds, instead of single devices, stuff like that

# macs are great
but I prefer itty bitty pc machines because for no money I can choose which brand processor to put in and alter as much as I want, without having to replace my computer as a whole. Besides, there's much more software available for pc and it's all so very much cheaper.

But for Photoshop I prefer mac, it also got great firewire standards :o

FireWire support on PCs is supposed to be improving, too, I believe.

My laptop has a FireWire 800 port. Rahh! I don't have asnything to plug into it though :/

# Mac OS 9
and, to a lesser extent, OS X, is built around the concept of a one button mouse. If you get the chance to sit in front of a mac for a bit, you'll see that there is very rarely a need to use a keyboard modifier... you can do pretty much everything with either a single-click, double-click, held down mouse button or a click and hold.

# morning
it`s making this odd noise when you boot into Windows?

haven`t come across it myself, but it sounds like it`s initialising some piece of hardware - did you turn off sounds in the multimedia settings? i.e. no "whoooshy" shite sound when you log in, no "clicky" noises when you browse web pages?

Win2K is smelly anyway :-)
(, Sat 13 Sep 2003, 11:48, archived)
#
Nah, there are no sounds enabled, one of the first things I turn off.

Only hardware I've added recently is a DVD burner, but unplugging that makes no difference.

My exhaust fan doesn't seem to be spinning any more, but thats not connected to the mobo, just to the PSU.
