i used my older camera, my Pentax k1000.
put it on for about a 5 hour exposure.
my new digital slr will only do 30 seconds, i need to buy a 80 dollar remote to do longer ones.

how does the remote work?
i set mine to "continuous photos" and taped the button down..

for my Canon 10D, digital slr, it would just lock the shutter open for X amount
of time i tell it to.
for my k1000, my remote is broken, so i used duct tape (makes camera sticky, but is innovative when you're in the middle of a field and you realize your remote is broken.)
EDIT - BTW, what did you use to stack them? I've been wanting to try that for some city star trailing shots, but haven't been able to figure out how to properly
