It was caused by the fact that the DSL Modem was USB2.0 and the PC only USB1.1. The modem kept swamping the USB bandwidth of the PC causing the connection to die (and only resume after a reboot). I put a USB2.0 card in the box and it sorted all my problems.
In the interim, I found doing a ping -t of a well known site (pref. someone you hate) kept the connection alive, with the downside of slowing the bloody connection.
Not saying that's the problem, but might be useful?
