# one of two reasons in my eyes then:
1. your modem is having a problem with the port bittorrent uses to access the net. find out (using google for example) what port your bittorrent prog uses, check its allowed access via any firewall you have running e.t.c
2. your ISP is monitoring connections and blocking file sharing, including bittorrent. this would explain why it would download so far then pack in, as your connection would be refused, requiring you to reboot.

# 2. seems most likely to me
you could try using a client which allows you to choose which port you use for bittorrent traffic to try and eliminate both problems

# I had something similar
It was caused by the fact that the DSL Modem was USB2.0 and the PC only USB1.1. The modem kept swamping the USB bandwidth of the PC causing the connection to die (and only resume after a reboot). I put a USB2.0 card in the box and it sorted all my problems.

In the interim, I found doing a ping -t of a well known site (pref. someone you hate) kept the connection alive, with the downside of slowing the bloody connection.

Not saying that's the problem, but might be useful?

# I don't think thats it

# sounds more like a problem with your isp/modem/connection to me
but have you considered trying a different client? i use azureus and shareaza

# Cheers
I'm starting to think it's my ISP too, though i do know other people with blueyonder broadband who aren't getting this problem so i'm still stumped

# Hmm
Do you use a router as well as a modem? I'm a blueyonder user and a few weeks ago my connection kept falling over. It turned out that it was my bloody router/wireless gateway. Despite the fact that the fix was rebooting the modem. One new wireless router later and everything was happy again.

Don't use torrents, so don't know if Blueyonder are arsy about them.

# No router..
just the modem, might be using a router in the near future though so cheers for the advice, that goes to everyone who's replied, thanks people

# Is it just the torrent
or the entire web connection that stops?
If it is just the torrent, are you set up to automatically reseed and share the downloaded pieces? In some clients, download speed is limited by upload speed.

# ..
It's every torrent i try, and then the whole connection goes kaput!!

# im having a similar problem
my connection just keeps dropping, it happened about 8 times in the space of an hour earlier

# Having read only the replies I am going to suggest something that's probably irrelevant.
My router/modem kept dying recently and it was exaserpated by use of bit-torrent. However the actual problem was the fact that I was using the proxy DNS in my router/modem (a D-Link DSL 504).
The thing is that the proxy DNS could not handle more than a certain number of 'live' DNS requests (ie, those that hadn't timed out).
Using bittorrent was causing it to thrash the DNS proxy which eventually lead it to die on its arse (the router was running out of memory).
So, it's probably nothing, but it might be worth trying turning off any proxy DNS you have and pointing your machine at your ISP's name servers.
