The blackness of the upper reaches of the image are redolent of the darkness that engulfs one's life when one turns one's back on God; the wildness of the eyes is demonstrative of the insanity which can be the only explanation for a voluntary refusal to acknowledge the omniscience and omnipotent benevolence of the Lord our God (who, lest we forget, died for all our sins).
