but then make a smaller pic (280 pixels wide is the limit if you want a chance of going onthe front page) that can be a link to the big one.

# tips for reducing gif size
reduce the physical size of the image (try about 200px wide). that's the biggest thing.

also, turn dither completely off, lower the number of colours until the quality goes too bad, and do the same increasing lossy till it gets too bad

the main problem is trying to get the colours to display alright when working on a computer that can only show 256 at a time (aargh!)

will bring size down to 200ish as well, just need to redo text.
