but then Flash and all the other add-ons stop working, because that's how IE handles plugins. So it kind of defeats the object of using the browser.

Yep. Face it, IE is fucked security-wise, and if you want to use it securely it becomes a full-time worry and a constant hassle. Surely it's better just to use a secure browser? Just my opinion.
