I dont think you can really compare Tyler and Santa.... although their both based on your dad...only in very different ways.

Santa's an anthropomorphic personification.
Tyler Durden is an imagenary friend!

right, his existence was not something the main character could control
that sucks.

It's just a split personality, and halucinations from lack of sleep, isn't it?

split personality
when Jack (name given to the main character, not necessarily his real name cos he's tyler) is awake, tyler is asleep
when jack is asleep, tyler is awake and doing his thing
that's why he thinks he never sleeps, in reality he's sleepwalking and watching himself live as tyler... if that makes any sense

the hallucinations would be him watching Tyler

well actually Edward Norton's character's name is Tyler Durden.
because he is tyler. notice that before he learns this, you never hear his name spoken at all
read the book too, it's really good.
sometimes norton's character is called "jack" merely for identification purposes.

He doesn't
but he's often referred to as Jack, as in:
"I am Jack's complete lack of surprise"
