If you used bits of other people's copyrighted images to create a composite that complicates things, but I'm not sure how.

Copyright is automatically granted to the creator of a work unless said work is done for work purposes as an employee of a company or the piece is commissioned. Most b3ta work, although it uses copyrighted materials, should be safe under the provisions of fair use and parody, I'd imagine.
