It's a layer settingthat adds the contents of the layer to whatever's on layers below it, so if you paint in blue on a multiply layer and the layer below has yellow on, you'll get green.
Or in my case, it allows me to paint over my cross hatching black lines without obliterating them because the colour is added to the black on the layer below.
Try it, it's groovy.
