It's a typo/version of "hehehe" I believe, and was /probably/ first seen in StarCraft multiplayer (ie YEARS before WoW). Normally used in such phrases as "KEKEKEKEKE ZERG RUSH ^______^".

I... I'm ashamed that I know this.
In WoW, you've got the two sides, Horde and Alliance. You can't communicate with the enemy, so when you type something, anyone from the other side just sees gibberish which is generated by swapping around letters or something.
"Kek" is what an Alliance player sees when a Horde player says "lol".
Fascinating, I'm sure you'll agree.
