actually he just got kicked in the leg at the time (by Dot Cotton)and fell over, and happened to land right next to a mouse carrying a rather large piece of glass, the mouse got angry and released his bloodthirsty Richard Whitely from his cage to bite Van Gogh on the nose and give him rabies (which is why he went mad) then a bear threw a tomato at him which was full of knives and hit his ear, cutting it off. bad luck really...
