I'm not the best advisor for this but it seems like you have a behaviour patternwhich you don't want to go on forever and would like to break it but you have it re-inforced by the fact that someone else HAS come along each time you keep your options open for the future.
Is there any way of comparing him to other people you've been in a similar situation with? Does he stand head and shoulders above them?

if you really want to break upthen explain to him why and tell him how it normally plays out in the end. Give him a chance to get out early or proceed with 'the knowledge'.
