I was watching a program a few months ago on that type of thing, and they featured a historical expert who recreated it as a hobby. And he referred to it as chainmail.

I have an SCA friend who calls it "maille" and when he says it, you can see the extra "le" hanging in the air... also he says chain mail is redundant because "maille" is made of chain chaine
