It had a huge fly last night. Nearly killed it the other day though. Completely through ignorance on my part, I tried to feed it a parasitic wasp. the Spider did a spectacular rope swing across the window and legged it across the kitchen! I had to retrap the wasp and find out what the hell it was... I felt awful when I realised what I'd nearly done...

Being impregnated with wasp eggs which results in being eaten alive...those cheeky Hymenoptera.

I'm so innocent of insects. I just assume they'll sit there and let themselves be eaten

I recommend Michael Chinnerys book, I did a module of entomology at uni (10 yrs ago - sniff) and if you were the kind of kid that used to capture insects in jam jars its fascinating (lots of great pictures!)

thanks! That'll make a good xmas prezzie from some relative or other. I need a good book about wasps now. I'm really rather ignorant of them.

Same bloke but I changed it to the book I have, it's a bit of a bible for zoologists.

It's a steep learning curve, having a spider move in

I'm going to get some Thai Stag Beetles from here when they have more stock.
I imagine it'll be a pretty steep learning curve too :)

There is a small population of stag beetles in Berkshire, when I was at uni in Reading some arsehole found one & fed it to his mantis (which almost lost the fight apparently).

I went to Uni at Reading too. Only ever saw stag beetles squished on the pavement though :(
