
A lot of people are getting the effect wrong.
The idea is to emulate the depth of field you'd get from a camera with a macro lens & wide aperture. This means that only a certain plane of the photo will be in focus, and that is a plane a certain distance from the camera.
Therefore it doesn't work if, as people have been doing, you blur random parts of the image, or change the focus on the vertical plane.
Silly people.
