cheers all.Making a gif (total jpg file size is about 180kb.). Saved and optimised and it was still well over 400kb! Bit poo frankly.

yeahbest bet for gifs is to make them 200-280 pixels wide, that makes the biggest difference to file size.
imageready is much better at optimising then animation shop.
