technicallythe number of the beast is 616, but the catholic church declared it to be 666 because it sounds more poetic, or pleasing or soemthing

They basically just read it wrong...616 was the number of Nero, as 888 is the number of Jesus etc. It was common to grafitti in numbers to slate each other and that whole section of the text was anti roman.
