i would suggest that it's idiomatic

Probably one of those awful ones like Ron Hubbard.
I just wince whenever I hear it. It grates. :/
edit: actually, thinking of it, it's not just the idiomatic phrase 'alternate universe'. I recall hearing our trans-Atlantic cousins use 'alternate' to mean 'alternative' in general usage quite a bit. :(
For example: "Why shucks, here's a mighty fine rifle for hunting them Latinos. And hey, if that ain't doin' the job there's an alternate model here that'll blow the head off a Frenchie from a mile away. Hot damn!"
