# If you're using photoshop, there's colour adjusting tools in image->adjustments
piss around with them for a while, or someone else here might know exactly what to do.

# Just select the bit you want to colour and you'll probably figure something out.
I'm no expert.

# A lot depends on the source pic you're trying to work from.
I'd probably use masked adjustment layers (hue/sat, brightness/contrast, color balance) to do most of the work, then use the dodge/burn tools on the source pic to improve the results.
Another possibility would be to paint the chains in an appropriate colour with the paint brush set to 'color' mode, which will preserve the brightness/contrast and luminosity of the source pic.
If it's really critical work, probably a combination of the two will do the job well enough.

# Oops
didn't mean to reply to your post. There's nothing at all wrong with your advice here. Whatever works is good enough :)
One of the things I love about photoshop is that there are so many ways to do things, so you can find the methods that suit you best.

Feel free to gaz me if you want some help with specifics. Personally I find gold a little tricky to get right, but I'll certainly look at what you've got if you want.
