Also the nearest shop is 2 bus journeys away, and they never have the music i want anyway.

I do see where you're coming from. Some bands it'll make very little difference to them whether you buy or not.
But I make a point of buying CDs from the smaller bands I like, especially at gigs where they can get most of the money directly without it being creamed off by middle men.
