There's a great programme I use called FreeRamcost nothing and just sits on your desktop and frees up ram when you ask it to.

ta,i think i've run that before, didn't really understand it so lobbed it out again, the odd break up isn't really that much of an issue, i was just wondering really if i just needed to fiddle with something to fix it, but it's pretty much as i thought, my little machine hasn't quite got the poke it needs, much like me really but that's another story.
