Once I realised that regardless of how much work I put into essays, I always got the same mark,I kind of stopped bothering to try too hard.

One of my coursemates was absolutely awesome at essays.He'd regularly get firsts. Except he always, without exception, handed them in a few days late and lost loads of marks.
