Adobe are as bad as Autodesk for shafting their customerson upgrades. If you can stick the learning curve try Corel Draw. It's far cheaper and comes with a Photoshop type thing called Photo-paint. It's cheaper, but I get a few compatablity issues with Illustrator. That said, it's Corel Draw 12, which is about 5 years old.

I have Corel Draw X4and Painter X plus Paint shop pro X and PSP Photo X2.
