Yeah, my thoughts summed up exactly.
I can't really tolerate people focusing on his disability (and often exploiting it for bad humour) when the guy is absolutely outstandingly smart. His work is so thoroughly interesting.

LOOK HE'S DISABLED HE IS PROBABLY STUPID AND THEREFORE I CAN DERIVE HUMOUR FROM THE SITUATION.
Am I close?
Hate to be a cunt about it. But I'm going to be a cunt about it.

i was deriving humour from the two meanings of the word invalid
i never said anything about stupid. if we're being cunts about it
in fact i took care to represent his point (about black holes & information) accurately as he put it at the time
(he's since changed his mind on it)

Cool. I'm probably getting pissy over nothing, I just admire the guy is all.

well be fair this one isn't laughing at his disability.
we laugh at simon weston but he is a great inspiration to other people.
we laugh at the disappearence of maddie though it has irreperably damaged a family for ever.
we laugh at hitler, stalin, mao.
in short, if we can't laugh at the fact he is disabled, even though we greatly respect his genius, then we've got lots more we need to stop laughing at. i imagine you've probably laughed at vincent van gogh for cutting his ear off as a result of his mental illness but he was a genius too.
edit: that came out as lecturing, i'm sorry i don't mean it like that. its just, y'know?

Interesting, but however, not proof.
We shall see how smart he is, one day in the distant future.
