You would think so,but they were not using blanks, just dummys (so a blank contains powder, but has no projectile, but a dummy is just an ignition cap) so there was absolutely nothing to go wrong, except, of course, that a round was squibbed in the barrel and even then it was bloody unlucky that it did the damage it did.
A round propelled by a cap would not be travelling much faster than you can throw it.
